The Second Church Meetinghouse is celebrating 200 years!
Sitting at the corner of State Road and White Horse Beach Road, Second Church is a beloved part of the Plymouth village of Manomet. This year, as the congregation celebrates the 200th anniversary of the construction of the meetinghouse, we're kicking off a Meetinghouse Restoration Project, including:
-
Structural enhancements to the Sanctuary floor
-
Restoring the iconic Bell Tower, Steeple and Codfish weathervane
These new initiatives complement additional maintenance in progress. The last major renovations and restoration to the Old Meetinghouse were done more than 70 years ago in 1953. At that time, the structure was lifted to install a basement. The new space includes the Meeting Hall, Sunday School room, and the community Food Pantry.
In celebration of the 200th anniversary, there will be monthly events highlighting the historical events of the church and the surrounding Manomet and Plymouth communities. We also hold annual spring, summer and holiday fairs. There will be a "Celebration Sunday" on November 8, 2026, as we wrap-up a year-long celebration of the Second Church of Plymouth meetinghouse.

The church congregation would welcome and very much appreciate the prayers, community engagement, and financial support in this major Meetinghouse Restoration Project and Meetinghouse 200th Anniversary Birthday celebration.

First gathered in 1738, Second Church of Plymouth is the oldest meetinghouse in Plymouth, with the current membership is also the longest, continuously meeting Congregationalist governed church body in Plymouth.
The congregation has been in three different meetinghouses, in three different locations in the village of Manomet since 1738. The present meetinghouse was erected in 1826, at Manomet Four Corners, by the parishioners “with much trouble” according to the old Precinct records, which are currently on loan to and carefully stored at Plymouth’s Pilgrim Hall.
The Second Church's spiritual and governing traditions are deeply rooted in our Pilgrim Congregationalist founders. The Second Church is affiliated with the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC) and the Massachusetts Association of Congregational Christian Churches (MACCC).
